On Monday afternoon, the Indianapolis Colts announced they have added veteran cornerback David Long to their practice squad. With this move, the practice squad is now fully occupied.
David Long, who stands 5-11 and weighs 196 pounds, was drafted in the third round by the Los Angeles Rams in 2019. Over his NFL career, he has played in 67 games, starting 43 of them.
Long spent this offseason with the New York Giants and, in 2023, played for the Carolina Panthers, Green Bay Packers, and Las Vegas Raiders. He logged 193 defensive snaps with the Panthers and Raiders and contributed to special teams with the Packers.
Throughout his career, Long has demonstrated strong tackling skills, successfully completing 92 of 103 tackle attempts, according to PFF. In coverage, he has allowed a completion rate of 68.8% on 109 targets, with an average of 12.2 yards per catch, one interception, and six pass breakups.
In addition, Long has accumulated 515 career special teams snaps and was a member of the Rams’ 2021 Super Bowl-winning team.
The Colts’ cornerback position has limited flexibility, with uncertainties surrounding both starting boundary positions and overall depth. The addition of Long offers experienced depth and potential support on special teams if needed.
