“Colts Work Out Key Prospects, Including Veteran Cornerback, as Season Opener Approaches”
The Indianapolis Colts are diligently evaluating their roster as they prepare for the 2024 regular season, with a particular focus on strengthening their depth ahead of their opening game against the Houston Texans this Sunday. According to NFL reporter Aaron Wilson, the Colts have recently worked out nine players, including notable names like former Super Bowl champion running back Leonard Fournette.
Other significant players being assessed include Steven Gilmore, the brother of former Colts cornerback Stephon Gilmore, and Zonovan Knight, a former running back for the New York Jets and Detroit Lions. However, the most prominent name in this round of workouts is Ahkello Witherspoon.
Witherspoon, a seasoned NFL cornerback with seven years of experience (previously with the San Francisco 49ers, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Los Angeles Rams), could make an immediate impact on the Colts’ secondary if signed. Throughout his career, Witherspoon has played 77 games, with 57 starts, recording 204 tackles, 11 interceptions, 49 passes defended, and 6 tackles for loss. Last season with the Rams, he had a standout performance, starting all 17 games and accumulating 52 tackles (3 for loss), 3 interceptions, and 14 passes defended.
Given the Colts’ need for additional support in their secondary, where Kenny Moore II, JuJu Brents, and Jaylon Jones are key players, Witherspoon presents a cost-effective option. His size (6’2″, 195 pounds) and skill set align well with defensive coordinator Gus Bradley’s preferences for cornerbacks. It remains to be seen if Witherspoon’s workout will lead to a contract offer, but he could be a valuable addition to Indianapolis’ defensive backfield.
