The Detroit Lions have emerged as one of the top teams in the NFL this season, finishing the regular season with an impressive 15-2 record under head coach Dan Campbell. As the No. 1 seed in the NFC, Detroit aims to secure a second consecutive NFC Championship Game appearance on Saturday when they host Jayden Daniels and the Washington Commanders at Ford Field.
While the Lions’ offense has been a major factor in their success, Aaron Glenn’s defense has also played a pivotal role. Despite dealing with numerous injuries, the defense ranked in the top ten in both points allowed and rushing yards allowed per game during the regular season. The most significant defensive setback came with the loss of star edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson. The 2022 No. 2 overall pick suffered a fractured tibia and fibula in a Week 6 win over the Dallas Cowboys. Although Hutchinson is hopeful for a Super Bowl return, it remains uncertain whether he will play again this season.
Hutchinson is a dominant force when healthy, but the Lions could benefit from adding another strong presence on the defensive line. Sportsnaut’s Matt Johnson predicts that general manager Brad Holmes may turn to free agency to address this need by signing Los Angeles Chargers edge rusher Khalil Mack.
While Mack’s prime All-Pro years are behind him, the 33-year-old remains a productive veteran. In 2024, he recorded six sacks, 49 quarterback pressures, and an impressive 87.7 run defense grade. Just one year earlier, Mack posted a career-high 17 sacks in 2023, and he has missed only one game over the past three seasons.
Though no longer in his peak form, Mack is still a reliable pass rusher and an elite run defender. His veteran experience would complement Hutchinson well, providing the Lions with a seasoned presence on a defense brimming with young talent.
