The Pittsburgh Steelers are rth the Vikings in 2024. He completed 66.2% of his passes for 4,319 yards, throwing 35 touchdowns against 12 interceptions, earning him his first Pro Bowl selection.
Despite his strong regular season, Darnold’s year ended on a sour note. He struggled in a must-win Week 18 game against the Detroit Lions and underperformed in the Vikings’ playoff loss to the Los Angeles Rams.
Even so, Darnold is expected to command a lucrative contract. Pro Football Focus projects a three-year, $123.75 million deal with $70 million guaranteed ($41.25 million annually). However, PFF notes concerns about whether Darnold can be more than a “bridge quarterback,” citing his 35 touchdowns alongside 24 turnover-worthy plays in 2024.
The Vikings have options to retain Darnold through a new contract, the franchise tag, or even a tag-and-trade scenario. If Darnold does enter free agency, it’s uncertain whether the Steelers would seriously pursue him, though his 2024 performance could make him an attractive upgrade over Russell Wilson and Justin Fields.
However, several factors complicate the decision. Darnold benefited from a strong supporting cast in Minnesota and has only one standout season on his resume. There’s no guarantee he would replicate his success in Pittsburgh or elsewhere.
While Darnold’s price tag would likely exceed that of Fields or Wilson, the Steelers will have to weigh the risks and rewards carefully. Ultimately, it seems unlikely that Darnold will end up in Pittsburgh this offseason.
