Detroit Lions’ Ifeatu Melifonwu Returns to Practice, Could Play in Season Opener Against Rams
Detroit Lions safety Ifeatu Melifonwu returned to practice on Thursday, potentially setting the stage for his participation in the season opener against the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday Night Football. Melifonwu, who has been managing an ankle injury throughout training camp, was sidelined after the preseason victory against Kansas City but was listed as limited on the first injury report of the season.
His return to the field on Thursday marks a positive development as the Lions continue to implement their game plan for the Rams. Melifonwu was a standout defender last season but has seen his role change after Brian Branch transitioned to safety, leaving Melifonwu as a backup. However, both players are expected to share responsibilities at safety and slot cornerback this season.
As the team inches closer to game day, safety Loren Strickland (thumb) was the only notable absence from Thursday’s practice, while defensive tackle DJ Reader (quad) was seen working on the sidelines during the 20-minute session open to reporters. Reader’s availability for the Rams game remains uncertain.
The Lions will issue official game designations on Friday afternoon.
