The Detroit Lions desperately need reinforcements on defense, as injuries have decimated the unit throughout the season. Unfortunately, making a significant addition this late in the year is challenging. However, one intriguing possibility could emerge: Miami Dolphins defensive lineman Calais Campbell.
Campbell recently hinted that if the Dolphins are eliminated from playoff contention, they might release him to allow him to join a contending team. Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald noted, “Whether Calais Campbell will finish the season here is fluid. He’ll remain as long as the Dolphins are in playoff contention, but being released to join a contender remains an option if they’re eliminated.”
While the Dolphins are not out of the playoffs yet, their chances are slim. At 6-8 and two games out of the final AFC playoff spot, elimination seems inevitable. Should Campbell become available, Marissa Myers of TWSN predicts he could land with the Lions.
Adding Campbell would significantly bolster Detroit’s injury-plagued defensive line. Despite being 38, the six-time Pro Bowler has remained effective this season, recording four sacks, 32 pressures, and 10 tackles for loss. His ability to play both inside and outside adds valuable versatility.
The Lions, who have lost three of their four starting defensive linemen, need depth to ensure their defense doesn’t hinder their playoff aspirations. This team has a legitimate shot at a Super Bowl run, and signing a veteran like Campbell could be crucial in maximizing their opportunity.
However, Campbell would have to clear waivers first, which poses a challenge. Numerous playoff-bound teams would likely compete for his services, and Detroit’s low waiver priority could work against them. While the chances of landing Campbell are slim, Lions fans can still hope for a defensive boost to strengthen their postseason push
