As Roosters rumors intensify, Chad Townsend confirms the Cowboys’ departure, saying, “Finalising my decision.”
With a possible move to the Roosters to complete his career, Chad Townsend has stated that he will depart North Queensland at the end of the current campaign. The Cowboys are now looking to the future in the halves, even though the veteran halfback joined the team in 2022 and led them to a preliminary final in his first season. Before Phil Gould, the team’s head of football, denied the 33-year-old would be moving to Belmore, Townsend was linked to a move to the Bulldogs last week.
In an attempt to add experience to the team, Townsend has reportedly agreed to sign a one-year contract with the Tricolours for 2025, according to reports from News Corp.
However, the playmaker stated that nothing was finalized at this time and that he hoped to make a choice shortly in an interview with Triple M’s The Rush Hour. “I’m in the process now of finalising my decision about what I do next,” Townsend stated. “I will admit that this has likely been one of the most bizarre periods of my career throughout my free agency period. There are many choices available to me both domestically and abroad, and I truly wanted to look into them.”

Now that I’m so close to making that choice, I’m hoping it will be formally announced before the end of the week. At this point, I have nothing formal to report. Townsend, one of the most seasoned halfbacks in the league with over 250 first-grade appearances and a title under his belt, would be a great asset to the Roosters, who will be saying goodbye to several stars at the end of 2024.
Townsend is committed to helping the team make it to the finals and contend for a championship, but he has a lot more to accomplish in Townsville before he departs the team. “I’ve given everything that I’ve had, I’ve been so grateful for the opportunity, and I’ve loved the people that I’ve met,” he stated. “I can honestly say that some of my teammates that I’ve met in the past few years are some of my closest friends. “When the season’s done at the end of the year I know that I can walk away with my head held high and I’m really happy about that.”
