After losing both Aidan Hutchinson and Marcus Davenport for the season, the Detroit Lions find themselves in a tough spot, prompting speculation from fans and media about potential trade targets ahead of the Nov. 5 deadline.
One name gaining traction is Cleveland Browns edge rusher Za’Darius Smith—and for good reason. With the Browns seemingly in sell mode, evidenced by their recent trade of Amari Cooper to the Buffalo Bills, Smith appears to be a plausible target for Detroit. However, when asked about the rumors linking him to the Lions, the three-time Pro Bowler seemed caught off guard, saying, “I didn’t even know about it.”
Despite his surprise, Smith expressed admiration for Hutchinson, calling his injury a significant loss and acknowledging the young star’s potential to win Defensive Player of the Year. Smith also admitted he’d welcome a move to Detroit. “If I was to go to Detroit, I would like it, because I get to play Green Bay twice a year and the Vikings twice a year. So, yeah, that’ll be big,” Smith said, per Scott Petrak of Browns Zone.
At 32, Smith would likely appreciate joining a winning team, especially given the Browns’ dismal 1-5 record, which has largely been overshadowed by struggles surrounding Deshaun Watson. While Smith might not have the star power of someone like Maxx Crosby, he’s still a valuable asset. With three career seasons of double-digit sacks, including three in six games this year, he remains a formidable pass-rusher.
Smith’s familiarity with the NFC North—having played three seasons with the Green Bay Packers and one with the Minnesota Vikings—only adds intrigue to the potential deal. A move to Detroit would give him the chance to compete against his former teams while bolstering the Lions’ defensive front.
