The Pittsburgh Steelers, one of the NFL’s most storied franchises with six Super Bowl titles, have struggled in recent years to find postseason success.
Despite consistently making the playoffs, they have not won a playoff game in eight years.
Head coach Mike Tomlin, who has led the team since 2006 and won one Super Bowl, has never finished a season with a losing record. However, the team’s recent playoff shortcomings have sparked discussions about his future.
Still, the Steelers, known for their coaching stability with just three head coaches in over 50 years, appear committed to Tomlin as he enters the first season of a three-year extension signed last June.
Following a lopsided wild-card loss to the Baltimore Ravens, Tomlin dismissed the notion that the team is “stuck,” though he acknowledged the disappointment of another early exit. He admitted he wasn’t in the mood to offer optimism, recognizing the frustration among fans and within the organization.
Changes to the coaching staff are expected, particularly on defense after a late-season collapse. Meanwhile, the quarterback situation remains uncertain heading into 2025. Skylar Thompson is the only quarterback currently under contract, while Russell Wilson, Justin Fields, and Kyle Allen are set to become free agents. Though Wilson and Fields have shown interest in returning, the Steelers could begin next season with their fifth different Week 1 starter in as many years.
While the offense showed promise during a stretch when Wilson won six of his first seven starts, the unit struggled late in the season, averaging just 14.2 points per game. Tomlin acknowledged the frustration growing among fans, comparing the team’s stagnation to a “Groundhog Day” cycle.
Despite the challenges, Tomlin remains confident in his ability to guide the Steelers back to success. He emphasized his willingness to adapt and evolve, focusing on schematics, preparation, and player development rather than just motivational messaging.
As he approaches the top 10 in all-time coaching wins, he remains committed to turning the franchise’s fortunes around.
