The quarterback position remains a point of uncertainty for the Steelers as the 2025 season approaches. Owner Art Rooney II recently confirmed that changes should be expected once again.
Russell Wilson and Justin Fields, both pending free agents, saw playing time last season as the team assessed its future options. Rooney expressed a preference for re-signing one of them and committing to a longer-term solution, which may hint at favoring Fields. However, keeping both quarterbacks seems unlikely.
“I wouldn’t rule it out, but it’s probably unlikely,” Rooney told ESPN’s Brooke Pryor. “Both of them see themselves as starters, and I don’t think they want to share the job again next year. So it’s likely we won’t bring both back.”
Rooney also noted that having two quarterbacks with similar skill sets would be ideal, per Mark Kaboly of the Pat McAfee Show. This suggests the Steelers will lean toward either Wilson, supplemented by a pocket passer, or Fields, paired with another mobile quarterback. Free agency is unlikely to yield many appealing options, making the draft a possible avenue for reinforcement.
“We’ve got a whole quarterback room to fill, and there are openings,” Rooney said. “I wouldn’t be surprised if we look to the draft this year or next — that’s a prsuac
With the 21st pick in April’s draft, the Steelers may miss out on top quarterback prospects in a lackluster class. Their last significant QB draft pick, Kenny Pickett, was traded away amid roster changes last spring. With Kyle Allen also set to become a free agent, the team could see several new faces by Week 1.
Fields, 25, hasn’t fully met expectations but led the team to a 4-2 start, which might attract free-agent interest. Still, he could find himself competing for a starting role elsewhere. Wilson, now 36, struggled late in the season, making a long-term commitment risky. With Pete Carroll coaching the Raiders, speculation about a reunion in Las Vegas has surfaced.
As Mike Tomlin continues as head coach, the Steelers are expected to make several roster adjustments, but resolving the quarterback situation will remain the focal point of their offseason.
