With less than two weeks left in the NFL’s 2024 regular season, the Browns are nearing critical decisions about their future.
In addition to determining which players to retain for next season, deciding which coaches will remain on the staff is a key focus for Cleveland this offseason. Sitting at a disappointing 3-12 record, the Browns are likely to make adjustments to their assistant coaching staff, assuming head coach Kevin Stefanski keeps his position for 2025.
The potential for coaching changes has been a hot topic recently. Analyst Albert Breer pointed out that the Browns face a major question this offseason: should they overhaul their coaching staff again or make targeted adjustments to improve on this season’s performance?
“This comes down to whether you feel the need to make a bold statement or focus on genuine team improvement. That was a factor last year,” Breer explained. He suggested the Browns may have erred in parting ways with offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt last season, as his absence seemed to have a negative impact. Cleveland’s decision to move on from Van Pelt was reportedly aimed at aiding quarterback Deshaun Watson’s development, but the move has not yielded the desired results.
The hiring of offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey has not revitalized the offense, which has struggled even more this season, scoring fewer points than in the previous year.
On defense, Breer speculated about the future of coordinator Jim Schwartz, suggesting he might get a “one-year mulligan” after leading the unit to historic successin 2023.
