The Pittsburgh Steelers have adopted a more aggressive approach since Omar Khan took over as general manager, making bold moves in free agency and staying active at the trade deadline. However, not all of these efforts have paid off as hoped.
During training camp, Khan reportedly engaged in serious trade discussions with the San Francisco 49ers about acquiring wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, though the deal ultimately fell through. This missed opportunity has been felt during the 2024 season, as the Steelers have struggled to find consistent production outside of star receiver George Pickens. While Pickens has performed well, the rest of the wide receiver group has been underwhelming, with Calvin Austin III emerging as the second-best option—an encouraging surprise but not enough to elevate the unit.
To address the need at wide receiver, Khan traded for Mike Williams at the deadline, sending a 2025 fifth-round pick to acquire the big-bodied, deep-threat receiver. Williams, however, has failed to make a significant impact. Since joining the Steelers, he has caught just eight passes and has been on the field for less than 30% of offensive snaps in half of his appearances. Although he delivered a game-winning touchdown in Week 10 against Washington, his overall usage and production have been disappointing, casting doubt on the value of the trade.
In addition to Williams, the Steelers acquired outside linebacker Preston Smith in exchange for a seventh-round pick. While Smith’s low cost and manageable contract made the move relatively risk-free, he has yet to contribute meaningfully. Smith was inactive during the recent game against Kansas City, raising questions about his role moving forward. Fatigue from a busy schedule without a bye week may explain his absence, but his limited snaps and production make his future in Pittsburgh uncertain.
Both trades have drawn criticism, particularly the move for Williams. Although the reasoning behind acquiring him was sound, his lack of impact highlights the Steelers’ failure to address the wide receiver position more aggressively during the offseason. The trade for Smith, while less consequential, also reflects missed opportunities to shore up more pressing needs, such as depth at cornerback—a position that has been exposed by recent injuries to Donte Jackson and Joey Porter Jr.
In hindsight, these moves have not provided the boost the Steelers needed, leaving Khan’s decision-making under scrutiny as the team navigates a challenging season.
